The University began as a subsidiary branch of Humboldt Universitat to foster a more open academic environment, different from the communist mindsets of the era. Freie Universitat enrollment began to rival then surpass that of Humnboldt, due in large part to the less restrictive academic environment.

In 1879, academics founded Technische Universitat. It’s known for various advances in technology. The school offers instruction in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science.
